Naturalistic sculpture of a doe scratching itself on a dark green marble base. Sirio Tofanari (1886-1969) was an important Italian modernist animal sculptor, known for his precise depictions of animals. He studied in London and exhibited his works worldwide, including annually at the Venice Biennale from 1909. In 1937, he moved to Milan, where he died a honoured man. Silver, cast and engraved, black lacquered eyes, signed S. Tofanari.
