Abstract sculpture of a reclining female figure carved in dark green serpentine marble with lighter natural inclusions.
Heinz Henghes was born in Hamburg in 1906. At an early age he moved to the United States, where Isamu Noguchi encouraged his interest in sculpture. Invited by Ezra Pound, he later worked in Rapallo, Italy, developing a lasting affinity for Carrara marble. In 1937 he settled in England, taught at the Royal College of Art under Frank Dobson, and exhibited internationally. He later became Head of Fine Art at Winchester School of Art. Henghes spent his final years in the south of France, where he died in 1975. Though associated with Surrealists such as Man Ray and Max Ernst, he remained independent of any particular movement. His work is distinguished by sensual forms and a sustained engagement with the human figure. Source: The Heinz Henghes Organisation.
