Fire-gilt Mantel Clock, France / Paris circa 1830

SOLD

SKU: 063-0201

French mantel clock made of burnished and fire-gilded bronze with an enamelled dial, there inscribed "'a Paris". The pendulum stands on a rectangular base with turned moulding, above which rises a detailed figural scene on four columns. The clock case is designed like a draped curtain. A young woman in classical dress sits on a stool and pours oil into a flame. A little dog keeps her company. The symbolic gesture of pouring oil together with the double heart in the wreath of roses on the small pedestal is anchored in the tradition of remembrance and is meant to keep the memory alive, here possibly of a love.
