19th century American sofa with carved mahogany frame and new dark blue upholstery, probably from Duncan Phyfe's workshop. Provenance: Anne-Outram Hinckley (married Gill Hodgkinson), Beacon Hill, Boston. Duncan Phyfe (1768-1854) is one of the most famous cabinetmakers of the 18th/19th centuries in America. He was born in Scotland but emigrated to Albany, New York at an early age.
